CENTCOM statement amounts to admission of responsibility for wartime atrocities
Iran’s mission to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has responded to a US Central Command statement touting “precise and professional” attacks on an Iranian oil tanker, saying the remarks amount to an acknowledgment of responsibility for atrocities committed by US forces during the war against Iran.
In a post on X, Iran’s permanent mission to the OIC reacted to CENTCOM’s statement regarding attacks on an Iranian tanker in the Gulf of Oman.
“You call it precision and professionalism, while failing to realize that a cowardly attack on a commercial oil tanker is hardly something to boast about or glorify,” the mission wrote.
Referring to attacks on civilian sites in Minab, Lamerd and Kuhestak, the Iranian diplomatic mission added: “How, then, can attacks on an elementary school in Minab, a sports club in Lamerd, a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak and other civilian locations simply be dismissed as ‘mistakes’ or ‘targeting errors’?”
The mission said CENTCOM’s statement constituted “an explicit acknowledgment of full responsibility for all the brutal crimes committed by US terrorist forces during the illegal war of aggression against Iran.”
“You cannot invoke precision when it suits you and call it a ‘mistake’ when civilians pay the price,” the mission told CENTCOM.
US President Donald Trump had previously sought to reject responsibility for the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, suggesting that Iran itself may have been responsible or that many countries possessed the Tomahawk missiles used in the attack. On another occasion, he said images of the incident had been generated by artificial intelligence.
Pentagon officials, however, have said the Minab attack and a separate strike on a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak, in Iran’s Sirik region, are under review.
The Telegraph previously reported that the wedding ceremony in southern Iran was struck with a precision-guided US bomb.
